ECOWAS appoints Akufo-Addo to lead election observation mission to Benin

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has appointed former president Nana Akufo-Addo as head of its Election Observation Mission (EOM) to the upcoming presidential election in the Republic of Benin.

The election is scheduled for 12 April 2026.

The appointment, announced by the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Alieu Touray, forms part of the bloc’s commitment to promoting democracy, good governance and regional stability.

According to ECOWAS, the mission will be deployed from 7 to 15 April 2026 in line with its Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance (2001), which guides election observation across the region.

The regional body said the move reflects its confidence in Benin’s democratic process and called on all stakeholders to uphold peace, tolerance and the rule of law.

ECOWAS further indicated that the selection of Akufo-Addo underscores its reliance on experienced leaders to support member states in organising credible and transparent elections.
