Man allegedly stabs friend to death over 2-year dispute during funeral rites

A long-standing feud ended in tragedy at Akyem Akokoaso in the Akyemansa District of the Eastern Region, after a young man allegedly stabbed his friend to death during a funeral gathering.
The suspect, identified as Adu Gyan, believed to be in his twenties, is said to have killed Nii Rich following a confrontation that stemmed from a misunderstanding dating back two years.
Eyewitness and a friend to the deceased, Mr Edward in an interview with OTEC News Reporter Kwame Agyenim Boateng said , the incident occurred on Friday May 30,2026 during the one-year observation ceremony of a mutual friend whose death had caused the rift between the two men.
Edward, who was present, recounted the moments leading to the stabbing:
“We all tried to separate them when the argument started. People were begging them to let it go because of the occasion. But it escalated so quickly. Adu Gyan brought out a knife and stabbed Nii Rich in the stomach.”
The victim was rushed to Akokoaso Health Center and later transferred to Oda Government Hospital for treatment.
However, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on Saturday morning.
“It is very sad that a funeral meant for healing and reconciliation has turned into this. We are calling on the youth to learn to settle disputes peacefully, especially during solemn gatherings.”
After the attack, Adu Gyan reportedly fled the community but was later apprehended by community youth and handed over to police.
Authorities have launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the killing.
Police are yet to release an official statement as investigations continue.
