KMA reintroduces “Samansaman” system to restore Kumasi’s Garden City status

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, KMA, has reintroduced the “samansaman” system to launch a major swoop on insanitary conditions in Greater Kumasi and restore the city’s glory days as the Garden City.

The enforcement exercise began on Monday with a special taskforce comprising soldiers, police, and environmental officers storming selected areas in Kumasi to arrest and immediately prosecute sanitation offenders.

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly is reintroducing an enhanced summons initiative, popularly known as “samansaman”, to enforce sanitary living across the metropolis.

The enforcement taskforce is currently patrolling parts of Ghana’s second largest city. KMA officials say the operation will be sustained until residents comply with sanitation bye-laws.

“We will continue to arrest those breaching the sanitation laws in the communities under KMA,” a taskforce officer said during the swoop.

Some residents who spoke to the media expressed excitement about the development.

“This is what Kumasi needs. If everyone keeps their surroundings clean, Kumasi will go back to being the Garden City we used to know,” one resident said.

KMA is urging all households and businesses in Greater Kumasi to adhere to sanitation regulations or face arrest and prosecution.
