KMA demolishes unauthorized structures around Baba Yara Stadium to restore order

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly’s Operation Team, with assistance from the military, has carried out a demolition exercise around the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in the Kumasi Metropolist

The exercise on Friday according to KMA was to remove unauthorized temporary structures that do not conform to the Assembly’s specifications.

The exercise targeted makeshift shops, containers, and kiosks that had sprung up around the stadium premises, many of which were cited for obstructing access routes and posing safety risks to patrons and traders.

The demolition forms part of the Assembly’s broader efforts to restore order, improve safety, and ensure compliance with its directives within the Central Business District and its environs.

Officials say the move is also aimed at beautifying the area ahead of major sporting events.

This action comes after months of prior notification from KMA to occupants in the area.

The Assembly had earlier issued notices and engaged the traders to vacate voluntarily to allow for the exercise, but many failed to comply.

Speaking during the exercise, Kumasi Mayor, Richard Ofori Agyeman Boadi, maintained that the move is to help sanitize the city and protect public infrastructure.

The Mayor added that KMA will continue to enforce its by-laws and will not allow unauthorized developments to undermine the city’s development plans.

He urged residents and traders to always seek proper approval before putting up structures.

The Assembly says similar exercises will be carried out in other parts of the metropolis.
