Ejura Divisional Council launches 2026 Sekyerene Yam Festival; 9-day celebration set for October
The Ejura Divisional Council has officially launched the 2026 edition of the Ejura Sekyerene Yam Festival.
The launch was held on Saturday, August 1, 2026 by the Festival’s Planning Committee, setting out a week-long line-up of activities aimed at promoting unity, culture, sanitation, and development in Ejura and Asanteman.
Addressing the media, the Chairman of the Planning Committee and Kontihene of Ejura, Nana Odiasempa Obugyen Antwi, announced the dates for this year’s celebration.
He noted the festival will be held under the theme “Sekyerene :Celebrating Ejura’s Rich Yam Heritage, Advancing Agriculture Innovation, Agribusiness and Sustainable Community Development”.
“The festival will commence on 16th October 2026 and will be climaxed on 24th October 2026,” he said.
According to Nana Obugyen Antwi, the festival will open on Friday, 16th October with special prayers at the Ejura Central Mosque with the Muslim community.
The second day will be dedicated to a massive clean-up exercise across the town.
On Sunday, 18th October, the Christian community will take over with prayers to mark the third day of the festival.
“On Monday, the fourth day, the Queen Mother of Ejura, Nana Akua Tiwaa II, will visit the Ejura Market Square to inspect trading activities and provide the necessary support to traders,”. the Kontihene disclosed.
He added that on Tuesday, the fifth day, Ejurahene Barimah Osei Hwedie II will lead a massive health walk and later address the community.
The day will also feature indoor games to entertain participants.
Wednesday has been designated as Youth Day, where the youth will showcase their talents through outdoor games and competitions.
Thursday will celebrate Ejura’s cultural diversity, with all tribes in the area showcasing their rich heritage.
Fetish priests will also perform at the forecourt of the Ejura Palace, followed by a quiz competition for students.
“Later that Thursday, Ejurahene Barimah Osei Hwedie II will proceed to the Stool Room with the newly harvested yam for rituals to pave the way for the main festival durbar,”. Nana Obugyen Antwi stated.
On Friday, 23rd October, the Ejurahene will again visit the Stool Room to conduct traditional rites and rituals for the community.
The festival will climax on Saturday, 24th October with a mammoth durbar, where Ejurahene Barimah Osei Hwedie II will sit in state to receive greetings from the people of Ejura.
The Planning Committee says the festival is expected to attract high-profile personalities, including top political figures from the Presidency, the Ashanti Region, and other parts of the country.
The Paramount Chief of Asante Mampong is also expected to grace the occasion
