Police and MTN renew partnership to strengthen road safety and compliance

Against the backdrop of persistent road traffic crashes and property damage across Ghana, the Ghana Police Service and MTN Ghana have reaffirmed their strategic alliance to promote driver compliance, increase public safety awareness, and curb traffic accidents nationwide.

The joint initiative, originally launched last year as part of a broader national traffic management framework, focuses on training corporate drivers, deepening their understanding of traffic laws, and integrating digital enforcement systems into daily fleet management.

The announcement was made during a specialized training workshop organized by the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) for MTN drivers at the telecom giant’s Nhyiaeso Main Office in Kumasi.

Corporate Compliance:

Speaking at the event, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Alexander Kwaku Obeng, Director in charge of Administration, Research, and Training at the MTTD, highlighted the tangible impact of the collaboration over the past year.

“Since launching the initiative last year, we have observed enhanced vehicle safety standards and maintained a zero-crash record among MTN’s fleet. Given these positive results, it is only natural that we continue pushing for higher standards,” ACP Obeng noted.

He explained that the training equips drivers with up-to-date knowledge of evolving traffic regulations, including digital compliance requirements and reinforces individual responsibility on the road.

Such corporate partnerships, he added, support public health while enabling law enforcement agencies to adopt smarter, data-driven approaches to traffic management.

Proactive Measures:

Also present at the workshop was Kwasi Bonnah Otuo Serebour, Acting Director of the Inspectorate Division at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), who commended MTN for taking a leadership role in driver safety.

Mr. Serebour emphasized the importance of shifting the national mindset from reactive measures to proactive prevention.

Pointing to the severe human and economic toll of road crashes in Ghana, he urged other corporate organizations to emulate MTN’s initiative by embedding strict vehicle maintenance and driver training protocols into their core operations.

Nationwide Rollout

The Kumasi workshop is the first in a nationwide series expected to benefit over 300 drivers as the program rolls out across all regional capitals in the coming year.
