Spiritualist who stole taxi and sold it to scrap dealers at GH¢7,000 remanded
A 37-year-old herbalist and self-acclaimed spiritualist, Enock Antwi, popularly known as Nana Kakali, has been remanded into police custody for two weeks over the alleged theft of a Hyundai Atos taxi at Assin Manso in the Central Region.
Antwi, who police describe as a suspected car snatcher, was arrested at his hideout in Agona Swedru on August 23, 2026, following an intelligence-led operation by the Cybercrime Unit of the Central North Regional Police Command.
The suspect, who is based at Wassa Nkran, is alleged to have stolen the taxi belonging to Benjamin Akyerefi Baidoo, alias Nana Maaley, a driver residing at Assin Manso.
The stolen vehicle, a Hyundai Atos taxi with registration number GT 6165-21, has since been recovered by the police.
How the incident happened
According to the police, the victim first met Antwi on July 1, 2026, when the suspect visited Assin Manso to purchase a dove for spiritual rituals.
The two exchanged contacts, after which Antwi allegedly offered to help the driver resolve what he described as spiritual problems.
On July 17, Antwi reportedly visited the victim’s home to prepare a spiritual concoction.
Later that evening, the driver allegedly drove Antwi to deliver some items to a relative. When the taxi became stuck along the way, the driver reportedly walked ahead to complete the delivery, leaving Antwi behind to watch over the vehicle.
Upon his return, however, the driver allegedly discovered that both Antwi and the taxi were missing. Attempts to reach the suspect reportedly failed after his phone number was deactivated.
The victim subsequently reported the incident to the Cybercrime Unit on August 12.
Suspect allegedly sells taxi for GH¢7,000
Police investigators, using court-authorised telecommunications data from MTN Ghana, reportedly traced Antwi to Agona Swedru, where he was arrested on August 23.
According to the police, Antwi confessed to stealing the vehicle and selling it to scrap dealers at Suhum for GH¢7,000, although he had received GH¢2,500 as an initial payment.
Police subsequently raided the scrap site in Suhum and recovered the vehicle intact.
Court remands suspect
When Antwi appeared before the Assin Fosu District Court, presided over by His Worship Abdul Majid Iliasu, he pleaded for leniency, describing the alleged theft as a “mistake.”
Chief Inspector Gilbert Abagna Anyongo, however, requested additional time for investigators to complete their work.
The court subsequently remanded Antwi into police custody for two weeks.
He is expected to reappear before the Assin Fosu District Court on September 8, 2026.
Meanwhile, the victim has commended the Central North Regional Cybercrime Unit for what he described as a swift response and the successful recovery of his taxi.
