7 dead, 4 trapped after galamsey pit collapses at Asaman Tamfoe

Seven illegal miners have been confirmed dead after a mining pit collapsed at Asaman Tamfoe in the Atewa East District of the Eastern Region.

Four others are still feared trapped underground as rescue teams continue efforts to reach them following the incident on Saturday, August 29, 2026.

The collapse occurred at about 11:00 p.m. while the miners were reportedly working in the pit in search of gold.

According to Citi News sources, two miners who were not inside the pit at the time of the collapse rushed to the community to seek help.

Residents subsequently mobilised a search and rescue team and alerted the Police and other relevant emergency agencies.

Rescuers worked through the night and managed to retrieve the remains of seven of the 11 miners trapped beneath the debris.

Five of the deceased have reportedly been identified as residents of Moseaso, while the remaining two are said to be members of the Asaman Tamfoe community.

Personnel from the Anyinam District Police Command, the Ghana National Ambulance Service, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and community volunteers are currently at the site.

The teams are continuing the search for the remaining four miners who are believed to be trapped in the collapsed pit.
