From classroom with twins on her back to Fashion Designer: How OTEC FM’s report changed Beatrice Agyei’s Life
In 2021, OTEC FM journalist Kwame Agyenim Boateng brought to light the heartbreaking story of 17-year-old Beatrice Agyei, a student of Offinso Namon SHS.
Beatrice, who had lost her mother, had given birth to twins while in SHS One. With no one to care for them, she was forced to carry her babies to school every day, nursing them in between classes while struggling to keep up with her studies.
Her story touched many hearts after it aired on OTEC FM.
Moved by her plight, the then Headmistress of Offinso Namon SHS and and administrative officer at the school Mr Appiah Emmanuel together with Kwame Agyenim set up a support fund for Beatrice.
Through contributions from benevolent individuals , about GH¢60,000 was raised into the account, which was used to cater for Beatrice and her twins and give them a decent life.
But her story did not end there.
Support from Heavenly Gift of Joy Foundation
Following OTEC FM’s reportage, the Heavenly Gift of Joy Foundation, a non-governmental organization established and solely funded by Mrs. Veronica Theresa Casely-Hayford Benson, took up Beatrice’s case.
In an extraordinary act of compassion, Mrs. Casely-Hayford Benson single-handedly constructed and fully furnished a one-bedroom apartment for Beatrice and her twins.
She did not stop at shelter; she continued to take full responsibility for their upkeep, food, health and education until Beatrice completed Senior High School.
After her graduation, the Foundation enrolled Beatrice in a fashion school where she trained in fashion design and event management.
Five years after the Foundation began supporting her, Beatrice has completed her training with flying colours and now has a stable life with her children.
For a young girl who once sat in a classroom with twins strapped to her back, uncertain about her future, the transformation is nothing short of a miracle.
Today, Beatrice can work, earn a living and take care of her twins with dignity, a huge relief for a family that once had no hope.
Her journey is a powerful testament to the impact of responsible journalism and the kindness of individuals like Mrs. Veronica Theresa Casely-Hayford Benson, whose generosity has given Beatrice and her twins a second chance at life.
