GPRTU, GRTCC announce new fares for trotros, taxis and inter-city services
The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have released the detailed fare schedule for the 8% increase in public transport fares, which takes effect on Saturday, September 26, 2026.
The schedule sets out the specific fares commuters will pay for shared taxis, intra-city trotros and inter-city long-distance services following the adjustment.
Under the new schedule, a standard intra-city fare of GH¢5 will increase to GH¢5.50, while GH¢10 will rise to GH¢11.
At the upper end of the intra-city schedule, a GH¢30 fare will increase to GH¢32.40, while the highest listed fare of GH¢34 will rise to GH¢36.80.
Inter-city fares will also be adjusted. A journey currently costing GH¢25 will rise to GH¢27, while a GH¢100 fare will increase to GH¢108. The highest fare listed in the schedule, GH¢300, will rise to GH¢324.
The unions said the 8% adjustment is calculated on the approved transport fares that took effect on May 24, 2025.
They attributed the adjustment to changes in the ex-pump prices of petroleum products, spare parts, vehicle maintenance and other operational costs.
The GPRTU and GRTCC have directed operators to display the approved fare schedule at loading terminals and stations.
They also warned that operators who charge above the approved fares will face sanctions from the unions.
The unions said government intervention on the price of diesel helped to moderate the extent of the fare increase.
The revised fares take effect nationwide from Saturday, September 26, 2026.
