Flooding at Kronum Aboahia sweeps away 7 pragia , 3 vehicles as bridge collapses

Over seven tricycles (Pragia) and three vehicles were swept away following a heavy downpour that caused severe flooding at Kronum Aboahia in the Suame Municipality of the Ashanti Region

Part of the Kronum Aboahia bridge collapsed after the Owabi River overflowed its banks.

Residents in an interview with OTEC News Reporter Kwame Agyenim Boateng on Wednesday said the strong current from the overflowing river pulled away the tricycles and vehicles parked around the area.

Fortunately, all the vehicles and tricycles have been retrieved, though they have been badly damaged.

Residents in the area disclosed that they have never witnessed such devastating flooding and overflow of the bridge before.

According to them, most of their belongings have been destroyed by the floodwaters.

The rain, which started around 7:00 pm yesterday and lasted for several hours, caused severe traffic congestion from Tigo Junction to Adonko Junction within the Suame Municipality.

Some residents of the area bitterly complained about the bad habit of Ghanaians dumping refuse into gutters and waterways, which they say choked the drains and worsened the flooding.

They are therefore appealing to the Suame Municipal Assembly and the city authorities to, as a matter of urgency, fix the collapsed portion of the bridge and desilt the Owabi River and major drains in the area to avert future occurrences, especially as the rainy season intensifies.

Confirming the incident, Boakye Richard, the Committee Chairman for the Kronum Kyerase Electoral Area, disclosed that even though no casualty was recorded, the tricycles and cars washed away by the flood have been destroyed.

He said the situation could have been worse but for the timely intervention of some residents.
