GNASSM to Visit Obuasi Today after Member Shot Dead

The leadership of Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners (GNASSM) will later  today visit Wawase , a small community in the mining town of Obuasi in the Ashanti Region to acquaint themselves information after one of their members was shot dead by police/millitary personnel.
The anti galamsey taskforce commissioned only last week clashed with illegal miners in the area who reportedly fired guns and pelted stones at the personnel to resist arrest.
The security personnel defending themselves from stone pelting and other attacks also retuned fire killing one of the illegal miners according to the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the operation Vanguard, Major Gariba Pobi.
The leadership of the Association are calling investigations into the matter as there are several contradicting accounts from eye witnesses.
“By the close of the day, our leaders are expected to go to the crime scene where we are told it occured contrary to what the military PRO is trying to make us believe”, Ben Annan, PRO GNASSM said.
“Our information is that none of our members fired a gun or threw stones but they were chased all the way from site to home where one was shot dead”, he alleged.
” We are going to conduct our own investigations to see if our security personnel used minimum force or otherwise as Minister of Environment told them to do”, Mr. Ben Annan indicated.
