There were instances of over-voting in the Ashanti Region, stronghold of the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), and it is only proper that the Electoral Commission (EC) conducts an audit, Deputy General Secretary of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho has said.

Addressing a press conference in Accra on Thursday, December 8, Mr Anyidoho stated: “It has come to the fore that in a lot of polling stations in the Ashanti Region, there was over-voting, and the law says if there is over-voting in any polling station, it should be annulled.”

This followed an earlier announcement by the EC that they were reviewing the results of the elections held on December 7 to ensure that cases of over-voting were dealt with.

Without citing any specific area, Mr Kofi Dzakpasu, PRO of the EC, said: “It has come to the attention of the Commission that several possible instances of over voting have occurred at a number of polling stations. As a result of this, the Electoral Commission has decided to review all results from the collation centres and verify them against the physical pink sheets from the polling stations.”

He, therefore, urged the public to remain calm and re-assured that the poll results would be announced within 72 hours after the close of polls.

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has urged the EC to announce the results claiming that results available to them indicate that its flag bearer Nana Akufo-Addo has won.

However, Mr Anyidoho reacted, saying that they (the NDC) have “always known that the NPP will misbehave but don’t let that deter you”.
