Asantehene and Queen Máxima of The Netherlands hold talks on financial health of Ghanaian families

The King of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Advocate for Financial Health, Queen Máxima of the Netherlands, have initiated discussions on improving the financial health of Ghanaian families.
The deliberation was held at the Manhyia Palace on November 4, 2026, when the Queen paid a courtesy visit to the Asantehene as part of her five-day visit to Ghana.
As the UNSGSA, Queen Máxima advocates for financial products and services that help people manage their daily needs, protect them against financial setbacks, help them invest in their future, and gain confidence in their financial future.
During the meeting, she unveiled her vision and objectives to the Asantehene as they discussed the financial architecture of the ordinary Ghanaian family.
“Financial health means that families can manage their daily needs, protect themselves against setbacks, and invest with confidence in their future,” Queen Máxima emphasized.
They identified low rates of long-term savings, retirement concerns, vulnerability to scams, and poor financial management habits as major threats to household financial health.
“We must address low savings, retirement concerns, and vulnerability to scams if we are to secure the financial future of Ghanaian families,” the Queen noted.
The discussions then transitioned into practical measures to promote financial resilience, such as economic recovery initiatives, job creation, and expanded digital access.
Also featuring prominently in the meeting was Ghana’s agricultural sector.
The leaders agreed on the need for investment in modern farming technology and the availability of long-term loans from financial institutions to maximise the agricultural value chain.
“Investment in modern farming technology and access to long-term loans will be key to strengthening the agricultural value chain and improving livelihoods,” Otumfuo Osei Tutu II stated.
