Bantama Gang Rape saga: fifth suspect nabbed

The Ashanti regional police Command has arrested the fifth suspect in connection with the gang-rape of a girl in Bantama in the Kumasi Metropolis

Four suspects are currently standing trial in juvenile courts for the crime.

At the court hearing on Wednesday, 10 January 2018, the five suspects were remanded again in the juvenile cell. They are expected to reappear in court on 17 January 2018.

The ages of the juveniles standing trial have become subject of debate in court meanwhile information gathered by OTEC FM’s Isaac Nsiah Foster revealed the school authorities could not provide the court with the requested records of the alleged juveniles standing trial.

Speaking to Newsmen Counsel for the juveniles standing trial lawyer John Boamah hinted prosecution told the court that another accomplice juvenile has been arrested in addition to four making the total number of arrested juveniles standing trial to five but the investigation is still ongoing.

“Nothing much happened today and the juveniles have been asked to go back to the juvenile cells to come back next week, we are waiting for the prosecution,” said counsel for the alleged juveniles standing trial lawyer John Boamah.

He further stressed the media houses are saying that there is an alleged rape police might also think otherwise, therefore it lies on the prosecution to prove the real age of the victim by documents he added.

However, about six lawyers were in court including former gender minister Nana Oye Lither to witness the case.

A source closed to OTEC news revealed the case has been adjourned to Wednesday 24th January.

The gang rape video has sparked massive outrage in the country with the majority of Ghanaians calling on the police to ensure that the boys are prosecuted.

The about five minutes video shows an underage girl pinned to a mattress by one of her abusers while his accomplices take turns in an attempt to perform sexual acts on her.

The victim who was resisting her attackers all-through the ordeal was restrained from escaping by her abusers who appeared to be having fun with the torture.

Various civil society groups have already condemned the incident and called on the police to take immediate action against the suspects.
