Government has released over fourteen million Ghana cedis for the settlement of salary arrears for validated teachers engaged between 2013 and 2016.
The issues of validation of teachers and payment of salary arrears have bedeviled the educational sector for years with newly engaged teachers bemoaning the long delays to receive first salary.
It sometimes take up to 3 year before teachers receive their salaries.
This has led to several agitations and sometime resulted in threats of strike by the teaching profession.
Addressing delegates at the 5th Quadrennial and 52nd National Delegates Conference of the Ghana National Association of Teachers, (GNAT) in the Central regional capital, Cape Coast,
Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia announced government’s decision to clear the arrears.
The finance ministry has subsequently issued a confirming the release.
This according to Dr. Bawumia demonstrates the importance the Akufo-Addo led government places on education and will work assiduously to improve the working conditions of teachers.
“Government places a very high premium on education because a motivated teacher is committed to delivering on the vision of the President and the Government,” he stated.
He, therefore, gave the assurance that the Government will do everything humanly possible to better the lives of teachers to ensure quality output.
