Make ICT education a priority – Minister urges students

Students in the Afigya Kwabre district and Ghana at large have been charged to make Information Communications and Technology (ICT) studies a serious subject at their tender stage this according to the minister of communications Hon Ursula Owusu Ekuful.

The minister made this statement at Kodie in the Afigya Kwabre district during a visit to one of the renovated Community Information Centres (CIC) in the area.

Hon Ursula Owusu who is on a 2 day working tour in the Ashanti region together with CEO of the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC) Mr Kofi Asante are inspecting projects being carried out by GIFEC which is an agency under the communications ministry.

During an interactions with students of Kodie and it’s environs who are currently being taught in ICT education, Hon Ursula Owusu chastised them to embrace ICT as the world is being ruled by ICT and it’s expertise.

The Minister’s tour also took her to Namong in the Offinso municipality where one of the CIC had been left abandoned to rot for five years.

According to the caretakers, the facility was completed in 2006 and was effective till 2013 which is currently being occupied by squatters.

Hon Ursula Owusu expressed worry and shock at which the project which had cost the country huge sums of money.

She however assured residents and students Namong that the abandoned centre was going to renovated and stocked with computers and accessories to enhance quality ICT education in the area.

She says it is the wish of President Nana Akufo Addo that every Ghanaian child gets access to quality education and therefore the abandoned Namong CIC will be brought back to work soon to serve the town and it’s environs.

She however warns all persons living in such government properties to vacate as soon as possible since her ministry is poised to take over and put them into good use.
