Be clear on new LPG levy – COPEC to Energy Minister

The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC) has called on the Minister of Energy, Mr Peter Amewu, as a matter of urgency, to dig further and deeper into the true state of the new levy at the various pumps as of the today, since the government direction to withdraw it is still not reflecting.

A statement signed by Mr Duncan Amoah, Executive Secretary of COPEC, stated that the Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) recirculation margin of 13.5p/kg introduced by the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) is still being collected from Ghanaians.

“Series of advice by players in the industry, suggestions, behind the scene discussions and public agitations have all fallen on deaf ears,” he stated.

He added that in spite of all the advice and direction, coupled with a legal action, an NPA communique on April 15 addressed to the Oil Marketing Companies and LPG Marketing Companies on pricing template for the 2nd window of April still captured the illegal 13.5p/kg.

Mr Amoah said “what that means is that the said levy is going to be collected till the end of the month when a new pricing template will be issued.”

NEW LEVY ON LPG NOT WITHDRAWN:

Our attention has been drawn to a statement made by the Honorable Minister Of Energy of the Republic of Ghana on an urgent matter of a new levy that has been introduced unilaterally by the National Petroleum Authority.

The said lpg recirculation margin of 13.5p/kg introduced by the NPA since the 1st of April 2020, is as at today the 16th of April still being collected from Ghanaians and has not been withdrawn.

Series of advices by Players in the industry, suggestions, behind the scene discussions and public agitations have all fallen on deaf ears.

The NPA has defied all public outcry and pressures to withdrawn the said levy, the grapevines have since a week after of the introduction of this new levy indicated there has even been a Ministerial advice to the NPA to withdraw and do the right thing but that has also not been complied with till now.

Against all the above stated reasonable advice and direction coupled with a legal action, the NPA in a communique yesterday to the Oil Marketing Companies and Lpg Marketing Companies on pricing template for the 2nd window of April still captured the illegal 13.5p/kg and what that means is that the said levy is going to be collected till the end of month when a new pricing template will be issued again.

We will be happy to have the Minister of Energy dig further and deeper on the true state of that levy as what pertains at the pumps as of this day and time doesnt point to a withdraw but further collections at a time the Government is doing everything possible to ease the sufferings of Ghanaians following from the Corona outbreak.

Signed

Duncan Amoah
Executive Secretary
