Coronavirus: Nose masks, Social distancing key to stop community spread – GHS boss appeals to public

The Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, is appealing to the public to adhere to the government’s directive to limit the spread of novel coronavirus, also known as COVID-19.

He expressed worry about the total disregard for the social distancing protocols as well as wearing of nose masks at a time cases recorded in Ghana are still moving up.

Dr Kuma-Aboagye expressed these sentiments on OTEC FM’s Breakfast Show Dubbed ‘Nyansapo’ on Thursday April 30, 2020 adding that the community transmission of the virus will be reduced if human contact is limited.

“Coronavirus is a contact disease so if we can avoid contact, it will limit the spread,” Dr Kuma-Aboagye told the programme’s host Captain Koda.

He was, however, happy the infection rate of the virus in Ghana is slow, an indication the measures being put in place are working. The GHS boss said if all the safety measures are taken seriously, the spread of the virus will be curbed.

He called on public-spirited individuals, organisations and the media to increase public awareness and education to complement the government’s efforts in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nose masks wearing

President Akufo-Addo has announced compulsory wearing of face masks from April 20, 2020, as the government intensifies the fight against deadly novel coronavirus.

The President in his seventh address to the nation encouraged the wearing of face masks to prevent the spread of the virus.
