Coronavirus: Suame Market closed down indefinitely (Audio)

The main market at the Suame municipality of the Ashanti region has been closed down indefinitely from Tuesday, April 22, 2020.

The closure of the market, which is located at the roundabout, was due to disregard to social distancing protocol and wearing of masks, means of halting the spread of coronavirus.

The announcement was made by the MCE for Suame Municipal Assembly, Hon. Dr. John Osei Bobie when he visited the market on Tuesday morning to enforce the social distancing protocol.

This is the second time the market has been closed down for the same reasons, the first been Tuesday, March 31 this year.

President Akufo-Addo on Sunday announced the lifting the 3-week lockdown on Greater Accra and Kumasi, with effect from Monday, April 20, but said all other directives are still in place.

The MCE speaking to Otec News’ reporter, Oheneba Kwaku Atta aka ‘Aporso’, said “the market was operating on double tracking system before the lockdown to ease congestion at the place for adherence of the protocol.

“But the “stubborn” tomato and onion sellers defy the measure and in an attempt by the Security Task Force to control them, they attacked them. In this regard, the market is closed indefinitely until proper arrangements are made with their leaderships,” he added.

Suame municipality cases of the coronavirus has risen from two to five, a situation Hon. Osei Bobie thinks proper measures need to be taken to control the spread of the disease.

He further warned that trading outside the market precinct is prohibited when it re-opens.
