Dancehall musicians Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale have been granted police inquiry bail after appearing in court Wednesday over the chaos that disrupted the 20th Vodafone Ghana Music Awards last week.

The two were granted a bail of GHC50,000 with one surety each, following an overnight detainment in police custody on Sunday.

Shatta Wale was charged with offensive conduct conducive to the breach of peace, and Stonebwoy charged with the use of offensive weapon, display of firearm in public, and threat.

Otec fm’s reporter, who was at the Agyabeng Court on Wednesday, 22 May 2019, said the two accused persons were present for the hearing in the company of their lawyers.

He said the two were in a sad mood and sat separately with their supporters looking sombre.

The presiding judge, however, admitted the two to a bail bond of GHS25,000 each with a surety, and adjourned the case to 20 June 2019.

Background

The 20th edition of the VGMAs nearly turned bloody when fans of Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale engaged in a brawl over an award.

The confusion happened when Stonebwoy was announced as the Reggae Dancehall Artiste of the Year.

Shatta Wale and his fans approached the podium to, ostensibly congratulate Stonebwoy, but events turned chaotic resulting in a lot of pushing and shoving – a situation that prompted Stonebwoy to pull out his pistol.

Some guests in the auditorium left the venue hastily but the situation was brought under control after an individual sprayed pepper on stage to disperse the crowd.

Both artistes have since apologised over the incident.
