Bawumia to speak on economy today at town hall meeting

Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will address Ghanaians on the state of the economy at an Economic Management Team town hall meeting today, April 3, 2019.

The meeting is being convened on the theme: “Our progress, our status, our future,” and will be held at the College of Physicians and Surgeons at 10:00am.

The town hall meeting, which is aimed at briefing Ghanaians on developments in Ghana, forms part of a new initiative announced by the Information Ministry.

The town hall meeting comes at a time the Ghanaian cedi is having some stability troubles and Ghana’s exit from the extended IMF credit programme.

The Executive Board of the IMF had approved the final disbursement of about US$185.2 million to Ghana.

Many Ghanaians have raised concerns about the health of the Cedi, which had depreciated against the dollar from GHc 4.9 to over GHc 5.5 since the turn of the year.

In 2018, the Cedi depreciated by 8.4 per cent against the dollar.

But the Cedi has been appreciating in recent times after some government interventions.

The government expects some fresh injection of capital such as the $750 million Standard Bank bridge facility among others to help deal with the challenges the Cedi is currently facing.
