VEEP Visits NSS for the first time, Praises Osei Assibey for reforms

In his quest to put duty bearers in check, Ghana’s Vice President, has paid unannounced visits to several critical state institutions since 2017.
On Monday, 31st January, 2022, His Excellency Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, paid a working unannounced visit to the National Service Scheme (NSS) head office in Accra.
The visit is the first by a Vice President of the Country to the Scheme since it was established.
The tour afforded him the opportunity to learn at first hand, the digitisation drive adopted by the Executive Director, Hon. Osei Assibey Antwi and his team in saving the nation about Ghc 112 million during the last deployment.
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR:
The Executive Director, Hon. Osei Assibey Antwi was full of praise to the Vice President for his visit, and took him through the Scheme’s system.
He revealed to the Veep that the system rejected about 14,027 non eligible applicants who could have received total allowance of about 112 million Ghana Cedis at the end of the service period.
Hon. Antwi also updated his guest on how the Scheme is poised to leverage on the competences of its personnel.
The Scheme, according to its Executive Director, is in partnership with Agri Impact to train young Ghanaians in Greenhouse agricultural initiative at Dowhenya with EXIM Bank Ghana on standby to finance these graduates after their training so they could enter into entrepreneurship to mitigate the menace of unemployment.
NEW INITIATIVE:
The Director also disclosed that the Scheme is readying to roll out a programme for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).
The difficulty of the SMEs in book – keeping is being solved by Mathematics and Accounting graduates to bring relief to the private sector at no cost, Hon Antwi hinted.
VEEP:
The Vice President on his part, commended the Osei Assibey Antwi led NSS in using Digitization to solve the myriad of challenges which has militated against government expenditure over the period.
He pledged his office’s fullest support to the leadership of the NSS for thinking outside the box.
He wondered how much savings the country would make if at least ten state institutions could go the NSS way.
