Assin North by-election: Police arrest fake soldier

The police have arrested an alleged military impostor in the Assin North Constituency of the Central Region, where a crucial by-election is taking place.

Multiple sources said the impostor was picked up after suspicions were raised about his behaviour. The suspect, who is yet to be named, is currently in police custody for interrogation.

In a related development, a young man has been arrested for posing as a community protection assistant in Assin North.

About 41,168 constituents are expected to vote at 99 polling stations in Assin North in what has been described as a critical by-election that would determine who controls the country’s legislature.

The seat became vacant after the Supreme Court declared the election of NDC’s James Gyakye Quayson as unconstitutional, null and void.

Main contenders

Today’s election is a straight race between the governing NPP’s Opoku and the opposition NDC’s James Gyakye Quayson, who was ousted as the MP for the area by the Supreme Court, which found errors in his candidature in the 2020 election due to his status as dual citizen at the time.
