‘Be ambassadors in the campaign against breast cancer’ – BCI Prez tells TTAG
The President of Breast Care International (BCI) Dr Mrs Beatrice Wiafe Addai has charged teacher trainees at the Colleges of Education in Ghana to be ambassadors in the campaign against breast cancer.
With their teaching skills, she believes that the trainee teachers will be able create the needed awareness about the disease in the communities they are posted to.
Mrs Beatrice Wiafe Addai stated that their tasked can be achieved if they (trainees) equip themselves with breast cancer knowledge.
She noted that breast cancer awareness must be intensified in the country to help reduce its deaths among women mostly in the rural areas who present late stage of the disease to the hospitals.
BCI president was speaking to the students at the Akropong Presbyterian College of Education at Akropong in the Akuapim North district in the Eastern region, on Thursday, July 27, 2023.
The students’ breasts were also screened clinically for breast cancer after education on the disease, as part of BCI ‘Kick-Out Cancer’ campaign sponsored by Delta Air Lines.
“After educating the trainees on the disease, we expect that they will in turn be ambassadors in creating awareness about it among the children, who in turn share among families about breast cancer to reduce premature deaths,” she said.
Mrs Beatrice Wiafe Addai who is also the CEO of Peace and Love Hospitals also said “the breast cancer knowledge shared in the communities will let the people know that the disease is preventable, treatable, curable and that it is not caused by witchcraft”.
“A lot of women are dying prematurely due to the lack of breast cancer knowledge and this can be reduced if the awareness about the disease is intensified. Therefore educational intervention is key in improving the general knowledge of breast cancer,” she stated.
Some of the students who spoke to Otec News reporter Simon Opoku Afriyie after the program that the exercise has enlightened them about the disease and have cleared their of some misconceptions about it.
“The knowledge I have acquired will help me be a better ambassador of breast cancer in creating awareness of the disease in efforts in reducing breast cancer deaths among women,” a student said.
The Vice Principal of Akropong Presbyterian College of Education Mrs Vivian Ockran was hopeful that the students will make good use of the knowledge acquired to create the needed awareness at wherever they may be.
