Speaker Alban Bagbin has no power to defy Supreme Court ruling – Professor Kingsley Nyarko

Professor Kingsley Nyarko, Member of Parliament for Kwadaso Constituency, has emphasized that Speaker Alban Bagbin has no power to disregard the Supreme Court’s ruling on the four vacant parliamentary seats.

He urged parliamentarians to uphold Ghana’s democracy by respecting the court’s directive and halting the declaration of the seats vacant.

This comes after the National Democratic Congress (NDC) declared themselves the majority in parliament following the Speaker’s declaration of four seats vacant, including three New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs and one NDC MP.

However, the NPP sought legal action, resulting in the Supreme Court ordering a stay of execution on the matter.

Despite the Court’s ruling, Minority declared themselves the new majority, citing the Speaker’s initial declaration.

Professor Nyarko in an interview with OTEC News Reporter Jacob Agyenim Boateng on Monday, countered that Ghana is governed by laws and expects the NDC to respect the constitution.

He noted that the Supreme Court acted in good faith and called on parliamentarians to await the final outcome of the case.
