Twelve candidates, including two women, have officially filed their nominations to contest for a spot on the Council of State, representing the Ashanti Region.
The candidates, aged between 27 and 68, come from diverse backgrounds, including traditional leadership, farming, business, and the media.
According to the statement of poll, the candidates are Nkansah Boadu Ayeboafo, Rose Hamilton, Frederick Adjei, Nana Yaw Akuoko, Alexander Nti, Nana Gyedu Kumanin IV, and Nana Kusi Ampofoh II.
The rest are Angel Yirenkyi, Nana Foriwaa Adwoa, Daniel Anarfi Yeboah, Bismark Adjei, and Yaw Owusu Obimpe.
The election is scheduled for Tuesday (11 February) and will take place at the premises of the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council in Kumasi.
Electoral process
A total of 86 assembly members, drawn from the 43 district assemblies in the Ashanti Region (two from each district), will form the electoral college and vote to select the region’s representative.
Ashanti Regional Director of the Electoral Commission (EC), Osei Nsiah, provided insights into the election process.
He confirmed that the EC had fulfilled its mandate by presenting copies of the nomination of polls—also referred to as the election register—to the candidates to aid their campaigns.
“This is a non-partisan election, and we (EC) expect that the selected assembly members would vote and select someone who has the interest of the region at heart,” Mr. Nsiah stated.
No disqualifications
Addressing rumours of disqualifications, Mr. Nsiah dismissed such claims, clarifying that all nominees who filed successfully remain in the race.
“In fact, no person has been disqualified from this race,” he asserted.
