NPP condemns suspension of Chief Justice, declares 22 April as “sad day” in Ghana’s history

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has vehemently condemned the suspension of Chief Justice Torkornoo, calling it a “bad day” in the history of Ghana and a significant setback for the country’s democracy.

The remarks were made by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong , during the first day of NPP’s nationwide “Thank You Tour” on Wednesday, 23 April 2025, at the party’s headquarters in Asylum Down, Accra.

Speaking passionately to party supporters, Kodua described the suspension as an unprecedented and unconstitutional move by President John Mahama, which has shaken the very foundations of Ghana’s democratic institutions.

“The Chief Justice of the republic has been suspended by the sitting president, something that has never happened under this fourth republic,” Kodua said, emphasising the gravity of the situation.

Kodua pointed out that the suspension took place despite an ongoing petition challenging the process at the Supreme Court, which further complicates the legality and fairness of the president’s action.

“This is not the democracy Ghana wishes for,” he stated. “At least, the president should adhere to the rules and principles of the law by allowing the due process to follow before carrying out politically motivated activities.”

He also called on civil society and the Ghana Bar Association to publicly condemn the actions of President Mahama, stressing the importance of maintaining the rule of law in the country. “We are on this video calling on civil society and the Ghana Bsr Association to come out to condemn the action of His Excellency President John Mahama,” Kodua said.

The NPP General Secretary also addressed concerns from party supporters, acknowledging past mistakes during the party’s time in power and expressing a commitment to learning from them. “We know we did our best in terms of infrastructure, in terms of policies, but we didn’t get everything right,” he admitted. “We want to say we are sorry for the disappointment that you had.”

Kodua assured the public that the NPP would continue to offer responsible and constructive criticism to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government and vowed to highlight the true state of Ghana’s economy in a press conference soon.

“Very soon, the 100 days will be over, and we will do a press conference to let Ghanaians know the true state of the economy and the true state of our needs,” he said.

The General Secretary also emphasised that the NPP’s focus would be on unity and reconciliation, both within the party and the wider Ghanaian public. “For the sake of unity, if you have even sinned against me, I have forgiven you,” he stated, urging party members to work together to rebuild the party ahead of the 2028 elections.

Kodua concluded with a stark warning: “Our democracy is under attack. Our judiciary is under attack. Do not think that this attack is on the person of Chief Justice Torkornoo. No. It is the entire judiciary. Expect massive protests from us. We will agitate. We will not sit down quietly. This is unconstitutional.”
