NPP’s early presidential primaries will unite party base – Justin Kodua Frimpong

The General Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, has emphasized that the party’s decision to hold early presidential primaries will help unite the base.

According to Frimpong, the earlier the party selects its flagbearer, the more time it will have to unite and make necessary internal arrangements for the 2028 general elections.

Speaking on Kumasi-based OTEC 102.9 FM’s afternoon political show “Dwabrem,” on Thursday, Frimpong justified the decision to hold the primaries on January 31, 2026, saying it was in the best interest of the party.

He noted that whoever leads the NPP to the 2028 polls would need ample time for internal arrangements.

The NPP’s National Executive Council decided on June 17, 2025, to hold the presidential primaries on January 31, 2026, a decision that has sparked debate among party members.

Some have described the date as premature, but Frimpong emphasized the party’s focus on conducting transparent internal elections and preparing fully for the 2028 polls.

Frimpong’s comments come as the party prepares to provide full rules and guidelines for the primaries, including nomination procedures, campaign timelines, and a code of conduct for aspirants.

The NPP aims to ensure a transparent and credible process that upholds its democratic values.
