Over 200 former MMDCEs declare full support for Bawumia’s Presidential bid

More than 200 former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) have formally endorsed former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in his quest to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 general elections.

The endorsement was announced during a media engagement following a closed-door meeting between Dr. Bawumia and the former MMDCEs on Monday, June 23, 2025.

Addressing the press, former MCE for Adentan, Ebenezer Doku, explained that the group’s decision comes after extensive consultations and a careful evaluation of all aspirants contesting the NPP flagbearer position.

“Mr. Doku noted, “Today, we have listened to former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, we have also listened to other aspirants, and we have come up with this statement as forum for former MMDCEs for Dr. Bawumia. We have invited you here today to meet the forum for former MMDCE’s for Bawumia. We are a forum of 220 MMDC’s who have served between 2017 and 2024 during the tenure of the immediate past NPP administration.

He added, “At this time, the party has announced the election of the flagbearer on the 31st of January 2026. We deem it important to let the rank and file of our party know our attention and our observations as we choose the leader for the 2028 elections. Following extensive consultation with all aspirants and after a thorough assessment of their vision, their competence and commitment to the NPP progress, we are convinced beyond any reasonable doubt that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is the best candidate to lead the NPP.”

Mr. Doku stressed that their endorsement goes beyond words, describing it as both a strategic and operational commitment.

“Pledging not just our votes begin, but our time, our resources and energy to mobilize, to campaign, and deliver a massive support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia candidacy. Our endorsement is not merely symbolic. It is strategic and operational commitment,” he added.

Meanwhile, the National Executive Committee and National Council, on Tuesday, June 17, announced that the party will have its presidential primaries on Saturday, January 31, 2026.
