Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) is set to have a Cardiac Catheterization and Interventional Heart Centre, 70 years after its founding, in a major boost to specialised healthcare delivery in Ghana.
The project is being funded by the Mahama Care Trust Fund under President John Dramani Mahama’s initiative to strengthen healthcare infrastructure across the country.
The announcement was made at the KATH Management, Consultants and Senior Specialists Consultative Forum held on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, at the Golden Bean Hotel in Kumasi.
The forum was held under the theme “70 Years of Impacting Lives: The Role of Quality in the Pursuit of Excellence.”
Speaking at the event, the Chief Executive Officer of KATH, Dr. Med. Paa Kwasi Baidoo, emphasized that the establishment of the centre will enable KATH to provide advanced cardiac care locally.
“This intervention will significantly reduce referrals of heart attack patients to Accra or abroad”
“KATH has received several heart attack cases every week but could not do much due to the non availability of such facility”
The CEO emphasized the government will also sponsor specialised training for health personnel to ensure efficient operations.
A Consultant Cardiologist at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and Lecturer at KNUST, Dr. Lamed Tetteh Appiah, also revealed that the hospital receives about three heart attack patients every week but is unable to treat many of them due to inadequate infrastructure.
He added that the proposed cardiac centre could save up to 90 percent of lives while urging the public to adopt healthy lifestyles through regular exercise, medical screening and proper sanitation.
