NPP Primaries: Dr Bawumia is not the only first-time candidate to lose an election in the NPP – Hon Kyei Mensah

Former Member of Parliament for Suame constituency and a member of Dr Bawumia’s campaign, Hon Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, has argued that Dr Bawumia is not the first to lose a presidential race on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party reflecting on historical anticident

He claims that first-time candidates often struggle or lose is a recurring theme, adding that same happened to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s 2024 performance.

He noted that history shows that several of the party’s most successful leaders needed multiple attempts to secure the presidency

Speaking on OTEC FM’s afternoon programme Dwabrem, hosted by Prince Nii Ardey, popularly known as Dr Cash, on Wednesday, January 29, 2026  Hon Kyei-Mensah reflected on the historical challenges faced by first-time candidates within the party. He said the perspective  serves as a strategic context for the 2024 loss and a roadmap for the 2028 election cycle.

“John Agyekum Kufuor lost his first attempt in 1996 before winning in 2000” , Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo faced defeats in 2008 and 2012 before finally winning the 2016 election, so it sounds a bit painful when people say Dr Bawumia is not popular and fit for the flagbearer position, he said “

Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu clarified that while Bawumia was a first-time candidate, the defeat was not solely his fault but rather a result of broader systemic failures
