Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has lauded Ghana as a “beacon of democratic inspiration” for Africa, calling for stronger cooperation between the two nations based on shared democratic values.

Addressing Ghana’s Parliament on Thursday, July 3, 2025, Prime Minister Modi praised the country’s commitment to inclusive governance and its resilience in the face of adversity.

“When we look at Ghana, we see a nation that shines with courage, that rises above history, that meets every challenge with dignity and grace. Your commitment to democratic ideals and inclusivity has truly made Ghana a beacon of inspiration for the entire African continent,” he remarked.

Modi, who was conferred with the Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana by President John Dramani Mahama, declared that the prestigious award to the people of India served as an enduring friendship between both countries.

“Receiving your national award from my dear friend President Mahama is an honour. I will always cherish that. On behalf of the 1.4 billion people of India, I thank the people of Ghana for this honour. I dedicate it to the enduring friendship and shared values that bind India and Ghana,” he stated.

He also paid tribute to Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, quoting his call for unity beyond external influences: “The forces that unite us are intrinsic and greater than the superimposed influences that keep us apart.”

Prime Minister Modi’s arrival in Ghana marks a significant high-level diplomatic engagement, being the first official visit by an Indian Prime Minister in 30 years.

The visit is expected to rekindle and strengthen the long-standing Ghana–India relations across diplomatic, economic, and cultural spheres.
