Ablekuma North votes in crucial Parliamentary rerun today

Eligible voters in Ablekuma North are expected to cast their ballots today, Friday, July 11, 2025, in a high-stakes parliamentary rerun across 19 polling stations in the constituency.

The rerun is aimed at resolving a months-long electoral dispute and restoring representation to a constituency that has remained without a Member of Parliament since December 2024.

Ablekuma North: A Seat in Limbo

The confusion over the Ablekuma North parliamentary results dates back to the December 7, 2024, general elections, when the outcome in 62 polling stations was contested.

Disagreements arose between the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the authenticity of pink sheets and the collation process.

The Electoral Commission (EC) proceeded to collate results from 59 of the 62 polling stations, leaving three unresolved. This prompted further legal battles.

In January 2025, the High Court issued a ruling directing the EC to complete the collation and declare results.

However, citing missing endorsements and irregularities in 19 polling stations, the EC later announced plans for a rerun in those areas to ensure electoral integrity and transparency.

NPP’s Boycott and Candidate’s Defiance

Initially, the NPP strongly rejected the EC’s decision, arguing that its parliamentary candidate, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, had won the December election with a margin of 414 votes.

The party filed an injunction to halt the rerun but was unsuccessful, as the court dismissed the case on July 9, describing the application as unmeritorious.

Despite the party’s official boycott, Akua Afriyie defied the directive and confirmed her decision to contest in the rerun. “I am contesting. We are fully prepared. We are going for this contest,” she told reporters on July 10.

Her stance received backing from some constituency executives, current and former NPP Members of Parliament, and party faithful, who actively campaigned on her behalf ahead of the vote.

NDC’s Confidence and Ground Game

On the other side, the NDC has remained resolute. The party claims its candidate, Ewurabena Aubynn, legitimately won the December election and is confident of securing a decisive victory in the rerun.

Party executives and MPs have campaigned vigorously in the constituency, urging voters to turn out in support of the NDC.

“The people of Ablekuma North are ready for change, and Ewurabena Aubynn represents that change,” said NDC’s Greater Accra Regional Director of Elections, Joshua Alabi, during a campaign stop on Thursday.

EC Assures Transparency

The Electoral Commission has reiterated its commitment to conducting a free, fair, and credible rerun. Speaking at a press briefing in Accra, Deputy EC Chair Dr. Bossman Asare assured voters and stakeholders that the Commission was determined to bring closure to the matter.

“We are desirous of bringing the election in the Ablekuma North constituency to a conclusion and to ensure that the constituents have a representative in Parliament,” he said.

Security has been heightened across the 19 affected polling stations to maintain order and ensure peaceful voting.

What’s at Stake

The outcome of today’s rerun will not only determine who represents Ablekuma North in the 9th Parliament but also signal the strength and cohesion of the competing parties.

For the NDC, a win would mean flipping a historically NPP-leaning seat. For the NPP, a victory by Akua Afriyie would underscore grassroots support, even amid leadership division.

As voters head to the polls, all eyes will be on the final outcome, which could have significant implications for both parties’ standing in Parliament and their internal cohesion moving into future elections.
