Asante Akyem North NPP Alleges Introduction of Galamsey into Municipality By Female MCE

Hon Sarah Amoakowaa, MCE for Asante Akyem North
The Asante Akyem North Constituency branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has stated its absolute opposition to any and all attempts to introduce mining activities, particularly the destructive practice of illegal small-scale mining (Galamsey), within its jurisdictional boundaries.
Condemnation of Mining Initiatives:
In a formal press release signed by the Constituency Secretary, Mr. William Aboagye Boateng, the party secretariat emphasized the severe risks posed by such activities.
Mr. Boateng pointed out that at a time when illegal mining has ravaged ecosystems, caused widespread environmental destruction, and instigated social instability across Ghana, the residents of Asante Akyem North cannot accept any policy or initiative that threatens to drag their peaceful communities into similar chaos and turmoil.
Community Alarm:
Deep concern has been sparked among residents following unconfirmed recent reports from the community of Amantena.
These reports suggest that officials from the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, accompanied by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Sarah Amoakowaa, visited the area without undertaking adequate or proper community consultation.
This development is particularly alarming given the painful history of insecurity and environmental threats the constituency has faced in the past.
The lack of transparency surrounding this high-level visit has significantly fueled anxieties within the community.
Protecting Amantena’s Water Source:
A paramount concern highlighted by the NPP secretariat involves the environmental consequences.
The area of Amantena is critically important, as it remains the primary source of good, potable drinking water for the community and surrounding areas.
This fact is substantiated by the numerous water production and bottling companies that operate from that specific location.
The Secretary stressed that permitting mining to commence in Amantena would irreparably contaminate and deplete this vital resource, thereby depriving the entire community and all patrons of water produced from this source of access to clean drinking water.
The potential for an ecological and public health disaster is immense.
Appeal To Member of Parliament:
The NPP Secretariat publicly appealed to the sitting Member of Parliament (MP), Hon. Ohene Kwame Frimpong, who, it is alleged, may have facilitated the introduction of potential investors to the community.
“We are calling on the Member of Parliament to prioritize the legitimate interests of his constituents against what many believe will be an irreversible disaster to the community if they are allowed to mine,” the Secretary stated unequivocally.
While the specific allegations of the MP’s involvement remain unverified, the Secretary noted that they accurately reflect the deep-seated anxiety and uncertainty currently felt by the residents.
“We therefore respectfully entreat our Member of Parliament, Hon. Ohene Kwame Frimpong, to address these concerns openly and transparently and work hand-in-hand with community leaders to ensure both transparency and the robust protection of the constituency’s long-term interests,” the Secretary stressed.
Sustainable Development:
The NPP Secretariat emphasized that if any individuals or investors have been brought into the constituency with the intention of engaging in mining activities, their resources and expertise should be immediately redirected toward productive and sustainable ventures.
“We urge that their skills, resources, or expertise be redirected toward productive and sustainable ventures that create employment for the youth—not activities that threaten our lands and livelihoods,” the statement read.
Mr. Boateng highlighted that Asante Akyem North possesses immense, untapped potential in several areas that genuinely require investment:
Agriculture and Agro-Processing
Youth Entrepreneurship and Skills Development
Sports Development
Community Infrastructure
These are the strategic areas that need investment and growth—not mining, which risks devastating the future the community is diligently building, the Secretary posited.
Commendation and Assurance:
The NPP Constituency Secretariat extended a hearty commendation to the youth of Amantena.
“We salute the youth of Amantena for standing strong, united, and resolute in defense of the community,” the Secretary praised.
He noted that their vigilance and timely action demonstrate true patriotism and uphold the noble spirit of Asanteman.
Assurance to Residents
The NPP Constituency Secretariat offered a firm assurance to all residents that it will continue to safeguard the peace, environmental health, and prosperity of Asante Akyem North with unwavering commitment.
“We will not allow any activity—no matter who initiates it or what powerful office they hold—to endanger our environment or compromise the future of our generations,” the Secretary concluded.
