A/R: Four dead as truck crashes into salon at Kumawu

A quiet day in Kumawu turned tragic on Saturday, January 17, after a tipper truck conveying sand for ongoing road works veered off the road and ploughed into a roadside salon, claiming four lives.

The victims included the proprietor of the salon, her two young children, and a customer who was in the container shop at the time of the crash. The impact completely destroyed the structure, leaving no chance of escape for those inside.

Four other people were injured in the incident, among them the driver of the truck. One victim, said to be in critical condition, was transferred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, while the remaining injured persons are being treated at the Kumawu Government Hospital.

Preliminary information indicates that the truck lost control while transporting sand from a nearby road construction site before crashing into the salon.

This is not the first safety scare involving trucks used for the Kumawu road project. In an earlier incident, another vehicle from the same construction works reportedly ran into a mosque, though no fatalities were recorded at the time.

The latest tragedy has heightened anxiety among residents, who are calling on authorities and the construction firm to urgently enforce safety measures to avert further loss of life.
