Police kill robbery suspect, recover weapons in Ashanti North operation

The police say they have foiled a planned robbery operation and recovered firearms and other items linked to a suspected robbery syndicate following an intelligence-led operation in the Ahafo Region.

The operation, conducted jointly by the Surveillance Unit of the National Operations Department and the Ashanti North Regional Police Command, targeted Ali Mohammed, 23, who was wanted in connection with several violent crimes.

Police said Mohammed was arrested on 2 June at Kukuom in the Ahafo Region after intelligence indicated he was planning another robbery attack.

According to police, the suspect was wanted for the fatal shooting of Dominic Frimpong on the Akyiresu–Kwame Dwomo Sreso road on 12 April.

He was also being sought over two separate robbery attacks at Bosomkyekye on the Mampong–Ejura road in July 2025 and February 2026, incidents that reportedly resulted in the death of a driver’s mate.

Police said the suspect opened fire on officers with an AK-47 rifle during the operation. Officers returned fire and subdued him.

Mohammed sustained gunshot wounds and was transported to the Goaso Government Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival, police said.

A search conducted after the operation led to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle, a pump-action shotgun, two AK-47 magazines, nine rounds of ammunition, three mobile phones, a motorbike ignition key, a black face mask, four talismans and a sack.

The Ghana Police Service said investigations remain ongoing and efforts are underway to arrest other suspected members of the syndicate.

Police identified the wanted suspects as Omar Chad, Dauda Tahidu, Suley and other accomplices who remain at large.

Authorities said the operation forms part of efforts to combat armed robbery and violent crime in the Ashanti and Ahafo regions.
