KMA clears 500 illegal structures at Asafo Interchange in crackdown on prostitution and drug trade

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly has cleared about 500 illegal structures around the Asafo Interchange as part of an ongoing decongestion exercise.

According to city authorities, the operation covers about 70% of the planned exercise in the area.

The exercise, carried out on Friday, was aimed at curbing criminal activities including prostitution and drug peddling that have been linked to the location.

Officials say the structures had become hideouts for unlawful activities, making the interchange unsafe for commuters and residents.

Kumasi Mayor, Richard Ofori Agyemang Zuba, in an interview with OTEC News Reporter Kwame Agyenim Boateng while supervising  the exercise, said the Assembly is committed to restoring order and safety around major public spaces in the city.

He noted that the Asafo Interchange was prioritized due to persistent complaints from the public and security agencies.

The Mayor further disclosed that the Assembly will extend the operation to other notorious areas in Kumasi.

“We will hit ‘Tinker Island’, one of the popular drug bases in Kumasi, and all other places soon,” he stated.

The KMA has assured residents that the decongestion exercise will continue in phases across the metropolis. City authorities are urging traders and squatters to desist from putting up unauthorized structures and to use designated spaces provided by the Assembly.
