The Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Majority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu
The Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Majority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu is insisting that new entrance Members of Parliament (MPs) must be allowed to contest the 2024 primaries unopposed adding that, the attrition rates in Ghanaian Parliament is not helping the needed human recourse to do proper parliamentary business.
Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu believes the selection process does not necessarily have to be by an election, which he said “has often time turned acrimonious thereby losing highly experienced MPS.”
Speaking on OTEC FM’S Breakfast show dubbed ‘Nyansapo’ on Tuesday January 4, 2022, Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu bemoaned the attempt by some elements within the NPP to remove incumbent MPs, including first-time legislators which according to him affecting the party’s activities in Parliament.
He noted that out of 138 MPS in the Majority caucus, more that 50% are new entrance and it will take them more than four years to be trained and learn the standing orders as well as parliamentary procedures adding that before the members were fully matured to become good legislature, they are booted out in party parliamentary primaries.
The Minister lamented on how the opposition NDC MPS are using their experience members to beat the Majority in some debate during the transaction of government businesses.
The Majority Leader said such negative activities distract the focus of MPs and negatively affect their attendance in Parliament which turns out to impact the transaction of government business.
“The National Party should own the process of selecting candidates to avoid any derailment in the forward march of the party. In this regard, I want to propose to the party that the constituencies should be encouraged to the largest extent possible to adopt the incumbent MPs for the purpose of the next general elections as any free-for-all election that is not guided or guarded will take over our great party,” he told the programme’s host Captain Koda.
