Bosomtwe: Six arrested after botched robbery operation

The police in the Ashanti Region have arrested six suspects in a robbery operation near Lake Bosomtwe in the Ashanti Region.
According to a statement issued by the Bosomtwe district security council (DISEC) on Tuesday, the incident occurred at 7:30 p.m., as visitors ended this year’s Easter festivities at the tourist spot.
The male suspects, some of whom were armed with firearms and other weapons, had blocked a part of the Abono stretch and were scaring victims and stealing their belongings.
They were, however, overpowered by the armed police officers who rushed to the site. During the intelligence-led operation, six armed gang members were apprehended.
During the police raid, a pump-action pistol and motorbikes belonging to unsuspecting victims were confiscated from the perpetrators, police sources told Newsmen.
According to Joseph Assuming, the district chief executive and chairman of the security council, the six suspects have been held to help police investigations.
“The police are still investigating the case,” Assuming said. “They engaged in pickpocketing. Some of them were wielding guns but they were all overpowered but now the six persons are in police custody.”
The security council has established a permanent emergency services team to safeguard tourists and other visitors to Lake Bosomtwe.
The tourist spot has long been one of the most popular relaxation and tourism sites for people in the Ashanti Region, particularly during Easter celebrations.
The site has now reopened after it was shut down for nearly two years due to COVID-19 restrictions.
