Essien joins Indonesian side on 1-yr deal

Former Black Stars midfielder Michael Essien has been introduced by Indonesian Liga 1 side Persib Bandung as their latest player. Essien is said to have signed a one-year contract with the Tigers, the first Asian side he will be playing for.
Essien told the club’s website on Tuesday that he wished his move will be the beginning of an influx of other world class players into the Indonesian league.
“I wish I could be a prelude to other world players grazing in Indonesia,” he told persib.co.id. “Hopefully this is a good beginning for Indonesia and PERSIB football.”
He promised giving his best for the club, which has won Liga 1 once – in 2014. Essien’s last club career was in Greece, where he appeared 13 times for Panathinaikos. He is most noted as part of Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea side that dominated English football in 2005 and 2006, winning the Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup. Among the European clubs Essien has featured for are Real Madrid, AC Milan, Lyon and Bastia. He played for Liberty Professionals in Ghana.
