Sports Lottery was not fruitful under NDC – Pius Hadzide

The Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports Pius Hadzide has disclosed that an initial evaluation of the Sports Lottery agreement entered into by the NDC government reveals that the venture has been unrewarding.

The Ministry in collaboration with the National Lotteries Authority embarked on the Sports Lottery project in 2014 in an attempt to help raise funds to support the development of Sports Infrastructure and the discovery of talent in the country.

According to then Sports Minister Mahama Ayariga a percentage of the proceeds was to be designated to the development of disability sports.

The Lottery project is currently in an abyss and is expected to be thoroughly scrutinized by the newly formed 13 man National Sports Fund Committee.

“Unfortunately what we have discovered does not indicate any profitability to the Ministry of Youth and Sports and Sports development in this country.

“The Ministry has directed the technical committee to also review these matters.

“We believe that the Sports Lottery must benefit sports and sports development but that has not been the case.

“One of the terms of reference of the technical committee is to review this lottery and make the appropriate recommendations,”he told Citi FM in an interview.
