Custom Officers Bemoan Bias Transfers
Some officers of the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), have registered their displeasure at their leadership for failing to transfer officers who have served more than 10years to other divisions of the service.
A custom officer who spoke on condition of anonymity explained that officers who have served less than 7 years are being transferred to other divisions of the service against the codes of the service, whiles many officers who have served in a single division for more than 10 years have still not been transferred.
”Some of us have stayed and worked in the northern region for more than 12 years without any transfer and you know how the place is”, he revealed.
”When this government took office and introduced a new management, they instructed our national officers to tour all the divisions of the service to inform us about their decision to transfer all officers who have served for more than 7 years”, he stated.
He explained that their leadership returned with the excuse that a problem at the Tema port had necessitated the postponement of the transfers to January next year which they agreed and were keenly waiting.
”Just recently officers who have worked for only a year or two are being transferred from the Ashanti and Brong Ahafo regions to other divisions like the airport, a situation which compelled us to petition our national officers but to no avail”, he told an Accra based radio station.
He explained that the Commissioner of Support Services who is in charge of administration has been undertaking these transfers without recourse to the commissioner of customs who could have furnished him with credible information about officers who have served long enough to be transferred.
According to him, the institution has about 4 divisions which every officer after serving at one of them for sometime, should be transferred in a rotational manner to another division to continue his work except for those who have specialised in one division.
He claims they are experiencing these setbacks because the Commissioner of Support Services who has been effecting these transfers is not a custom officer and as such is ignorant of the processes involved in the transfer of officers.
