COPEC to lead Commercial drivers and ICU to protest against fuel hikes

Commercial drivers and members of the Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU) are expected to hit the streets Wednesday, to demonstrate against the rising fuel prices in the country.

According to the chamber, there has been persistent increases in the price of petroleum products for the past five months which have brought untold hardship to Ghanaians, especially transport operators.

The chamber in a statement said several petitions to government to review the pricing formulae or build-up and the taxes have not yielded any noticeable results as prices continue to increase unabated.

The chamber, therefore, said together with several other transport unions across the country and the general workforce of the Industrial and Commercial Workers Union, will stage a peaceful street protest.

The walk will start from the famous Obra Spot at Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra through some major streets to the Accra Arts Centre following which another petition will be submitted to the Ministry of Energy and Finance, the Parliament of Ghana, and the Office of the President.

CHAMBER OF PETROLEUM CONSUMERS-GHANA

NOTICE OF A DEMONSTRATION

6/02/18

The past 5 months across most pumps has seen a persistent increase in the price of petroleum products in Ghana with the corresponding hardships these increases often come with.

Several press releases on the subject matter including a recent press conference addressed by the leader of the largest Workers Union in the Country-ICU, has so far yielded very little results as the increases continues unabated, with the most recent one being yesterday.

Several attempts to draw the attention of authorities to the need to review the pricing formulae or build up and the taxes has equally not seen yielded any noticeable results including a petition on same matter submitted to the Presidency in the month of September 2017.

In view of the above, the Chamber together with several other Transport unions across the country and the general workforce with the Industrial and Commercial Workers Union, will stage a peaceful street protest and demonstration tommorow morning at exactly 7am.

This walk will start from the famous Obra Spot at Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra through some major streets to the Accra Arts Centre following which another petition will be submitted to both the Ministries of Energy and Finace, The Parliament of Ghana, and the Office of the President.

We entreat the public and everyone who feels the pressures of these incessant increases in fuel prices to join this peaceful expression of uneasiness in our pockets.

The excuses must indeed end, the Taxes must be reduced to bring some reductions and stability in prices.

The public is by this notice cordially invited to join in this peaceful demonstration first thing tommorow morning.

Long live the progressive drivers of this Country and all other Unions.

Long the ICU

Long live Copec Ghana

Long live Ghana.

Thank you.

Signed

Duncan Amoah
