The Ashanti Regional Deputy Director for Clinical Care, Dr. Fred Adomakoh Boateng, has condemned what he called, “No Bed Syndrome” incident which happened in Accra recently and stated the syndrome does not exist in hospital in the Ashanti region.
He explained doctors and nurses are uniquely trained to attend to any patient particularly, emergency case and under no circumstances should a critically ill or dying patient be denied admission or turned away from the hospital adding, anything contrary to that is an exhibition of blatant unprofessionalism.
Dr Boateng made this comment in the aftermath of the Accra incident resulting in the death of a 70 year old man after he had been denied admission by seven hospitals under the pretext of none availability of bed.
According to him, there are various alternative provisions for such patients which included bench, wheel chair or even the floor to be given immediate attention as few minutes delay could result in death.
The Deputy Director pointed out that referral cases to other hospitals usually happen when there is lack of certain facility or beyond the ability of the medical team.
He described the Accra incident as heartbreaking and called for measures to avoid future occurrence. He also asked the public to have confidence in them as their core mandate is to save life.
