Killing of ‘Gang of 7′: Uneasy calm returns to Asawase after violent protests
Uneasy calm has return to some parts of Asokori-Mampong municipality in the Ashanti region after protests by some irate Zongo youth in the area on Thursday, July 19, 2018, following the gunning down of seven suspected armed robbers by the police.
Otec News’ reporter Isaac Nsiah Foster, who have been following the events said though economic activities have resumed in some areas like Allaba, Asawase and Aboabo, heavily security still remained as administrative and security forces fear the Zongo forces might resurface to wreck havoc in the area again.
The mob had earlier besieged the Kumasi Central Mosque to demand justice for the 7 alleged robbers who were shot by police officers on Tuesday at Ayirebikrom near Manso Nkwanta in the Amansie west district of the Ashanti region.
The youth who blocked the main road leading to the Central Mosque on Thursday, July 19, were seen chanting war songs and burning vehicle tires in the middle of the road, causing a lot of tension, which resulted in the vandalizing of vehicles.
It took the timely intervention of the Zongo Divisional Police Command, and a police officer was injured in the process.
Ashanti Regional Police gunned down 7 suspected armed robbers Tuesday, July 17, 2018, in a fire exchange at Manso, believed to be retaliation to the death of Lance Corporal Daniel Teiku, who was allegedly killed by masked armed robbers while on duty with his colleague on July 11 this year at the same area.
Lance Corporal Eric Nsiah, was killed when eight masked men attacked the vehicle they were traveling in at Ayirebikrom near Manso Nkwanta on July 11.
