Ashanti Region: 207 people died in 1,204 accidents in six months – NRSC
Statistics released by the Ashanti Regional Road Safety Commission indicate that, a total of 1,204 accident cases were reported between January and June 2018, representing an increase of 17% as compared to same period in 2017 which resulted to the death 207 people.
Out of a total of 2,030 vehicles involved in the accident, 45 percent of them were commercial vehicles, 42 percent private vehicles, and 13 percent motor and tricycles.
Speaking on OTEC FM’S Breakfast show, ‘Nyansapo’ on Wednesday July 4, 2018, the Ashanti Regional Director for the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC), Ing Samuel Asiamah, announced that , 20 7 people died this year, representing an increase of 36%, as compared to the previous year with a record of 1,400 injuries.
Ing Samuel Asiamah noted that the main causes behind this unfortunate phenomenon included over speeding, fatigue, drunk driving, among others, leading to this record for the period under review.
He then mentioned Accra-Kumasi Highway, Kumasi-Sunyani Highway and Offinso-Techiman highway as the crash-prone areas for the said period.
He added that the vehicles involved in the various accidents summed up to 2030; of which 45% were commercial, 42% were private, and the remaining percentage shared between motorcycles and tricycles.
He has however advised drivers and other road users to exercise a lot of caution when plying the roads; he admonished them to observe all the road signs and make their safety their priority. He also implored the authorities to formulate policies to mitigate this disturbing situation.
Ing Samuel Asiamah blamed drivers for lack of maintenance of their vehicles, over-speeding and disregard for traffic regulations, among others.
