NADMO begins rescue mission in flooded towns in Ashanti Region (Photos)

The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has begun a rescue mission in some parts of the Ashanti Region following a downpour which claimed at least six (6) lives.
Officials of the organization on Sunday, July 1, toured the hardest hit areas in the region such as Esereso , Dompaase-Aprabo, Sewua and its environs all in the Bosomtwe District.
XYZ News‘ Ashanti Region Correspondent, Jonathan Ofori reported that at Esereso, more than 50 residents, including children, were rescued after their houses got submerged.
Following the heavy rains, the Oda River also flooded its banks across access routes to some of the towns in the district and cut residents from other adjoining communities.
Residents of Onwe, a town near Ejisu in the Ejisu-Juaben Municipality have also been cut from Ejisu because of the floods that have taken over their roads.
Some bridges on some of the roads in other communities have been destroyed by the floods.
Bosomtwe District NADMO Coordinator, Hon Michael Acheampong blamed the situation on people siting their structures on waterways.
He therefore called for laws that will regulate the construction of buildings in the country especially on waterways.
Persistent rains since Thursday have left parts of the regional capital, Kumasi have caused disaster. Some residents have died, houses have collapsed and properties running into several millions of cedis have been destroyed, according to Jonathan.
Tragedy first hit Asabi, a community in the Asokore Mampong Municipality where three (3) bodies that were swept away by floods were recovered.
Areas such as Airport Roundabout, Angloga Junction, Dichemso, Buokrom, and Amakom were all submerged when the rains poured for more than five hours.
The rains, accompanied by strong winds, thunderstorms and lightning have forced some schools that were affected to close down.
