Suame residents kick against store building project

Some residents of Suame are fighting against a proposed building project by some bigwigs on a land reserved for the Ghana water Company limited (GWCL).

According to them, the assembly member of Old Suame electoral area,  Emmanuel Okyere and  some developers in contravention of the layout of the area, are planning to put up stores in an area earmarked for the  expansion of water supply.

Otec news sources confirmed that Emmanuel Okyere and the Suame Municipal Assembly is planning to erect a structure in the reserved lands for the Ghana water Company.

The Ashanti North Regional office of the GWCL at Suame has two main water tanks that supplies over one million litres of water daily to the major areas in the Kumasi metropolis.

A resident who has worked with GWCL for over 20 years explained that the two major tanks which were constructed by two ex-presidents, Jerry John Rawlings and John Agyekum Kuffour respectively cannot meet demands of residents in the Kumasi metropolis, hence the need for future expansion.

A spare parts dealer at Suame, Mike Obbeng, said they will oppose any attempt by the assembly or any developer to encroach on the land.

“We already have a lot of issues regarding portable water supply in the country, and so constructing stores on land meant for the expansion of water supply in future would be a stab in the back of Ghanaians” he emphasized.

The angry residents have appealed to authorities in the region and the leadership of the GWCL to intervene in order to avoid any conflicts.

ASSEMBLY’S RESPONSE

Responding to the claims, the coordinating director for Suame Municipal Assembly Mr Rashid Said the assembly has not pened down any project in the said area .

He explained that activities at the Ghana water Company’s site is one of the major projects  the assembly is seeking to protect and so they would not do anything to bring it down.
