Transport fares up by 20%

Three driver unions – True Drivers Union, the Ghana Committed Drivers Association and the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana – have increased transport fares by 20 per cent.

The increase takes effect from today, Monday, 29 October 2018.

According to the Chairman of the Committed Drivers Association of Ghana, Mr Charles Danso, the increase in fares has become necessary due to the incessant increases in fuel prices by the Oil Marketing Companies and Bulk Distribution Companies, coupled with they say is the escalating price of spare parts.

Speaking to Newsmen, Mr Danso apologised to Ghanaians for the increase but explained that the drivers had no choice than to hike fares.

He said the associations took the decision unilaterally because they are not under the control of the Ghana Private Road and Transport Union (GPRTU) or the Ministry of Transport.

He pleaded with commuters to bear with them, since, in his view, a 20 per cent increase was not an overkill.
